UX – Microsoft can talk the talk, but…

Sounds like Richard Banks is finding out what Microsoft means by ‘differentiated user experiences’:

Richard’s Braindump: Problems with the new MSDN Download Manager

How is it that Microsoft can spend so many marketing and evangelism dollars telling us about the new world of user experiences and then supply us with such a crap tool?

On a similar note… are Microsoft ever going to get serious about their own technologies that they tell us are pivotal to achieving UX nirvana?  For example, when will they start showing WPF some love?  One of the big reasons that C# was a success was that Microsoft mandated its use.  One of the major reasons that WPF is going to be a failure is because Microsoft don’t use it in their own apps.  Live Messenger should be a WPF app, so should the new Zune software.

  1. Microsoft mandated the use of C#? Really? In what apps?

  2. You may remember it differently, and probably more accurately than I do, but I do recall hearing or reading that, in the very early days, Microsoft was pushing hard to ensure that C# was used internally.  I don\’t get the same feeling about WPF – and it surprises me.  Aside from the pure rendering side of things, WPF has a heck of a lot going for it – especially wrt such things as databinding.

I feel that a lack of aggressive \’dog fooding\’ of WPF in the applications that MS provide us with is one of the major things that is holding WPF back.  I mean c\’mon… did you see the list of things that WPF got from 3.5?  I did.  It was so bad that they had to claim the AddIn model as a WPF feature 🙂
